Wondering what to do with Fabric Swatches? Look no further!

Here’s what unfolded from a sudden spark of inspiration at my desk—one of those unexpected creative moments that I just had to share.
I’d been wracking my creative brain, trying to figure out what to make. You know that feeling—creator’s block? Yep, I had a case of it.
So, I did what I always do when I’m stuck: I started making collage papers. Tearing, layering, gluing… all the usual suspects. But as I was working, I suddenly thought, this feels a little too normal. I needed something different using something out of the norm!
And then—bam! It hit me like a ton of inspiration bricks.
Why don’t I use my hundreds of fabric swatches? (I mean, seriously… why hadn’t I thought of that sooner? 😂)
Fabric is More Than Just Fabric
I treated the swatch just like a piece of paper—starting with a coat of gesso to give it a solid base. Then came the layers of pink, soft and bright, dancing across the fabric. I sketched a flower right on top and began adding dimension with stencils, texture butter, and paste.
The final touch? A bit of detail using my Posca pen and a Sharpie marker. That combo always brings my designs to life.
Texture Makes the Magic
What I love most about working on fabric is that the texture from the swatch itself becomes part of the art. It adds this beautiful, tactile depth you just can’t get with paper alone. Each stitch and weave holds color differently, catches the light in its own way, and gives your piece a built-in story.
Ways to Use Your Swatch Art
Once it was done, I stepped back and thought—this could be:
- A mini art piece to hang on the wall
- The perfect cover for a handmade journal
- A bold, textured element glued to the front of a notebook
- Or even part of a larger stitched art piece or collage
